Sam graduated with a Pharmacology degree from the University of Aberdeen in 1998, and with a Veterinary degree from the University of Cambridge in 2003. After graduation she worked in mixed practices in Scotland and Cumbria, working mainly with production animals. In 2007 Sam undertook a small animal internship at Dick White Referrals, Newmarket, and from there started a senior clinical training scholarship in small animal surgery at The University of Edinburgh.

After finishing her residency Sam remained at The University of Edinburgh, as a Staff Surgeon and then Lecturer and Senior Lecturer, accepting both soft tissue and orthopaedic referrals. She became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and a European Veterinary Specialist in Small Animal Surgery in 2015, and a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Recognised Specialist in Small Animal Surgery in 2016.

Sam left The University of Edinburgh in 2019 to develop her vision of Veterinary Specialists Scotland, a new multi-disciplinary small animal referral hospital in association with Professor Dick White. She is now Clinical Director of VSS as well as the leading soft tissue surgeon.

Away from work (if she has any free time) Sam may be seen windsurfing or sailing on Loch Tay, rowing on the Union Canal or incessantly throwing a tennis ball for her fox red Labrador.
